Atypical Joy (for Syne)

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Title: Atypical Joy
For: [info]mnemosyne_1
Summary: A subtle courtship
Word Count: 337
Notes: For Syne who is too far away to cast a cheering charm. I did shamelessly steal this from [info]westernredcedar, who generously beta’ed this version because she is that fantabulous :D

Remus didn’t need to consult a Lunar Almanac update him about the past weekend – not that he had an almanac any longer by the look and taste of things this morning. The unexpected partial lunar eclipse had meant that he couldn’t take the Wolfsbane. Despite the havoc he’d unleashed on his basement, however, the memory still brought a smile to his face.

Severus had swirled through the Floo, a fury in a whirlwind of dark robes, knocking the vial from Remus’s hand. After a quick Evanesco and a scathing comment about wasting meticulously gathered potions ingredients, Severus had demanded to know why Remus had not yet contacted him. Severus had stood very close, his voice growing simultaneously quieter and deeper, the rich timbre explaining that while the moon’s path was obscured, Remus would start to change back and the Aconite was likely to kill him. Remus had been shocked but not so much as to ignore that the scent of Severus’s adrenaline, boot polish and curry breath would likely do him in as well.

Remus didn’t remember climbing a short flight of stairs to his bedroom. When the pile of blankets he’d crawled under stopped his muscles from screaming, he remembered something else. Night Phlox! Severus smelled of Night Phlox – which didn’t mean much in itself, except that his dose on Saturday had also smelled like honey covered almonds and tasted of dark chocolate buried in the garden.

*

The scent’s vanishing woke Remus with a start. By his bed there was another vial of Wolfsbane, a glass of water and a note.
Lunar effects are back on course. Drink this directly. S
A revised edition of the Lunar Almanac greeted Remus in the kitchen, filling him with atypical joy. The book opened to September with the same book mark Remus had tucked into the treatise on magical nocturnal flora he had given Severus last month.

I just signed up for Snupin Santa 2008!!!
After looking over my list of prompts I cut it to three, which hopefully gives enough choice. Though there is a theme of both of them learning about each other as individuals, and LOTS of potential for kinky porn, I would not be sad if they were PG and there was just fun banter btwn them :D

All the prompts submitted thus far sound SO fun! I'm thrilled! In other news, I am warming up for this fic-tastic event by writing two short fics. And then I swear I'll get back to work on the science....

Commitment

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

To celebrate stuff going on in California, I recommend you go out and read this book. If you already have I'm sure you know its worth a re-read :)

life long courtship

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
When the missus and I got together, she was in the middle of moving out of her parents' house and came across her Grandfather Book - a book of fun facts one of her uncles put together with his father before he passed away. The man was a riot, but he also gave us the most brilliant relationship advice I've seen to date.
He didn't have much money when he married Mrs.Ink's grandmother, so he vowed that every day would be their honeymoon and their first date.
They are words we live by and would even if we had millions of dollars :)

So, as I'm sure you've all heard, the missus and I now have to opportunity to be officially married - even more officially than the domestic partnership since it would be a lot harder to revoke the marrige rights than the partnership rights.
And I'm still hesistant because I want to keep having those moments were its still the first date and a simple kiss changes my world's rotational axis. But what better opportunity to sweep her off her feet and simultaneously celebrate the warm fuzzy feeling I get when I hand her, her lunch in the morning as I see her off?

And then there is the biggest dilemma. If we get married again, that might change our official anniversary and I SO don't want that - its on Halloween :D

I forgot to add that we are indeed getting married. Its just a matter of when to do it vs. doing it and then having the best Halloween wedding the world has ever seen! -For the amount of money we will put into it :)

Month of MAY

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
What is it about May?
For the spouse its bike to work month - she is the captain of her department at work, and adorable in that hardcore, tough as nails kinda way :)
Its inter/national(?) masturbation month.
Lusty Month of May
And lets not forget FINALS.

Considering that last item on the list, and the horrors it promises, I decided trying to go for LMoM would be idiocy beyond which I am capable, but it saddens me. I'm inspired, I have bunnies to write and its so not happening for the next two years :( With any luck for the next three years...

But there is one last thing May is.
For me, May is the month dedicated to the sense of Smell. Thanks to [info]mnemosyne_1 I have enough BPAL scents to have a new one every day :) Which means I'm behind about writing on them here, but that my days have this whole new dimension to them and I'm now aware of scent so much more! It really is amazing. As are pheremones - who knew people flirted with scent all the time? (Okay, everyone knows that but its amazing to experience it/be aware of being aware of each other's scent.)
My lab partner this term is amazingly fun, brilliant, very married (he and his sweetie are pregnant) and unlike most straight guys I know, he knows how to use his eyebrows :D Essential in the art of subtle flirtation that clearly wont go anywhere, but is still fun/flattering :)

The Past: Mass Exodus

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
When I first moved in with Mrs.Ink, it was just before the start of term. I unpacked as much as I could and the rest went into he pantry/utility closet/space off the kitchen which we wanted as an office. She already had stuff there and we installed a metro rack where we actually keep towels and things extra toilet paper. That was five years ago.

We've been meaning to clean it out since then, but didnt know where we would purge all that stuff to. FINALLY we found this Eco-Haul place, and now, in two hours we are doing away with everything. Some of this is stuff we've had since high school (at least a decade ago for both of us), some of it was from before that, but sentimental. The rest was just stuff.
Now its going. All of it.

I had to take a second out to sob like some one had died when we got rid of my teddy bear. I'm still a bit teary, even though it doesn't make sense: Its a toy. I am turning 30 in June.
He was also my only friend for the first five years in this country when we moved around constantly and even when we didn't I was a complete outcast.
I suppose now I have Mrs.Ink so all will be well.

...Or why I should just not stop studying

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. Severely sprained ankle
2. Its gorgeous outside and I'll never start again
3. High praise from instructors = almost as good as the best slash

#1 has got to be the stupidest thing to happen this week. Injuries of that proportion need a good story. For example I have this double puncture scar on my right hand, that up until like two years ago looked extraordinarily gruesome, and it involves the Mayan ruins, climbing and McGuiver like first aid. Every knee dislocation story is at least hilarious and the burn marks on my arms correspond to interesting recipies, even if most are completely faded to normal skin. But this! Well...

I caught the bus right after gen. chem with a vague idea of where I was headed - and here vague is generous because I had never been to that part of SF. And though I have no sense of direction, I noted the the bus started going in the opposite direction after a while. 'No problem' I think, 'I'm close to the right Ave, I'll just get off here.'
Here turns out to be quite a ways from where I'm headed - unless I cross Golden Gate Park. People think of parks and they think an open green space.
If thats you're idea of a park, GGP will disabuse you of that entirely. Have I mentioned that I had never been to it alone, and never that part.
So I find myself in the middle of HUGE shrubbery with no clear path and start to laugh. I am at the Mecca of cruising spots, on my way to meet a guy, run into this nice Middle Eastern couple who marvel that such a nice young girl is walking in that part of the park by herself, and insist on taking me to the Polo field. The polo field. There. Thats the funny part.

It was a great friend hook-up :) [Yes, I know what you were thinking. When I told him the story behind why he had to meet me in the polo field, he got the biggest kick out of it] We had a fun visit and then I went home. I had just gotten out of the train station and all of a sudden, I'm on the floor. The high school kids waiting for their ride thought it was hilarious until I wasnt getting back up.
I'm okay. Really. Just embarrased and sore.

Dear [info]mnemosyne_1,

I don't really know how to tell you this, but I'm selling myself.
I think I realized it when you put cuffs on me in your closet and I saw you pull the clothes off Bill Clinton.
I'm sure you're ashamed enough to understand that there is no solution to this.
I'm returning your loveletters to you, but I'll keep your photo as a memory.
You should also know that I never liked your passionate interest in mice.
Good luck on your short term leave from jail,

The gates of hell open - and I happen to be standing close by.
No this isn't about [info]mnemosyne_1's lovely tale - which I shall turn to for therapy in a second. This has everything to do with why this particular semester of Physics has been known to make people cry. My prof is darling, and I enjoy going to class. The TA is also kick ass, but this crap is hard.

So if any of you have been wondering if I'm alive, I am - I'm just busy facing The Ring Maker (there a nice pun for all the physics nerds).

In other more pleasant news I just got stuff from BPAL!

Plunder

Technical Drama

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Despite the fancy virus etc. protection on my computer, we got hit, HARD. Part of it might have been that we were actually hit twice, once with the virus and then with its new and improved form. Now I've gotten pretty good at getting rid of these things, but this is imbedded DEEP in Windows to the extent that I would have to remove it via DOS which I haven't used since I hit puberty.
The help tech I spoke with was actually really impressed I could get to it - and just as quickly rolling his eyes at my incompetence to follow what he was doing over the phone. In the end, I had to submit a hijack file to him and now I am waiting for his response....
Until then, no iTunes, or much of anything since this can barely handle going on line. Its all about safe mode - and the traditional "If this gets fixed soon, I vow never to click on links to Alan Rickman interviews or to research wolf dominance ritual behaviours ever again."

Living up the last night of Spring Break!!!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
This has been the best week ever! For the first time since I was in...oh probably Jr.High, I had Spring Break off! Or rather, I took the break off and didn't really study or take on extra hours at work!
You'd think that meant I worked on the house instead. Well kinda. The thing is that we now haven't done laundry for two weeks, and as I gathered it up this morning I realized that it really adds up! So tonight, Mrs.Ink and I are going on a hot date: the laundromat! Okay, yes, I know "old marrieds" right? Probably. But laundry is actually quite romantic on a cool rainy night. We get to go to a place we really like (laundry around here is almost dangerous), its virtually deserted on Firday night, and we get really good take out :D

Now to enjoy some Snupin and my lovely new icon :D

Mercy Icon

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
[info]mnemosyne_1 inspired me to try to make a Mercy icon - having never made an icon before, the computer fought me - that and my eyes are a little puffy from a specific scene... It was going to say "Less sense than God gave to little apples" because that was one of my favorite lines in the last book, but I'm not there yet...Tomorrow is another day :D

Mercy Books

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
You know Spring Break has officially started when I can curl up with a book that has absolutely nothing to do with Physical Science :D
I just got through "Blood Bound" - and OMG! The happy couples :D The VERY!OMG!SO!SCARY Wulfe! Wow. Yes, I know, I *just* got through the second book. I'm trying to savor them because after 3, who knows when the other will come out? This is the same way I started reading HP. PoA had just come out and I was hooked.

In other news, I've been enjoying playing housewife to Mrs.Ink. Studying should probably be higher on the priority list, but actually getting my first spring break ever (i.e., I'm not working my ass off) has inspired me to sketch, write and to cook in ways I'd forgotten I knew how. Which makes me realize there is an order of things in my world:

1. That which compels me to create
2. Order
3. Productivity

Okay, I'm off to make the house magnifiscent, then there will be reading, and then possibly some homework :D

Uncooperative space time continuum

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
There are somethings that just carry across sciences:
1)Lab Repports
2)Entering the data into a computer TAKES FOR FUCKING EVER!!!

For once I didn't put this lab write up off. I actually started on time whilst trying to juggle the ton of other things due before it. However it was short sighted on my part - or at least in terms of looking at the calander and noting that this weekend was Easter Weekend. *headdesk*
This means that my head start means absolutely nothing. It means that even though I was not out celebrating, I was out dealing with the drama that befalls my family right when its not convenient. We were at Urgent Care/ER on two separate occassions for very different things. Upon visiting my parents yesterday we might have been there a third time except that my dad is stubborn and there is no dealing with him when he is having a panic attack. Luckely everyone is more or less okay.

The stress probably isn't from the lab report, just the fact that it is due in a couple of hours, nowhere near done, and that chaos is never factored into my time line.
Yay spring break?

ETA: Its off! Its not done, but there is content on the page for my lab instructor to look at and hopefully not cry over.
The good news? Yes, there is good news. As I sat here in panic, knowing it wasn't going to be finished, I discovered that I ACTUALLY understand Magnetic Fields of Coils! Its a serious mind trip. So now I'm going to finish the report for the hell of it, and see how fabulous it can be without having to deal with family.

Observing Severus: Day 1

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Severus was REALLY late today, I only noticed (sitting near the front today) because true to form, he made an entrance like 25 minutes into class. He's a shorter than I thought, and I got to see his face - OMG he is such a puppy! His nose is definitely prominent - angular, he has very thick though geometrically nice eyebrows and brown eyes. He seems nice.

As I'm no fan of Marauder's Era stuff, I think I'm going to let this be. He may be nice art inspiration but it makes me feel creepy to observe some one at least ten years younger than I am (if he's older than 19, I'll go vegan).

When Fandom and Physics collide...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Wednesdays for me are soul sucking, spirit-breaking, waiting in line for execution, days when everything is due. This means I've slept little the night before and food is just a pleasant memory for the time I am at school. Wednesdays are days of Physics.
So when I got to the train station and they were announcing a 20 minute delay I was both excited and in schock: I was going to be late for school - my hands cramped at the thought (flashbacks of writing lines for being late.).

Environmental Chemistry is up first that day, and I was late so that meant sitting in the back and scrambling to catch up because the stuff we were doing is not in the book. Next to me there are notes worthy of Vatican scribes in the middle ages. I have never seen such meticulous notes (aside from mine) and they were neat (clearly the guy in league with Lucifer). I was just about to my neighbor if I could photocopy them when theis chick storms in and starts asking him questions. It was then I realize I am sitting next to 19 year-old Severus Snape (tall thin guy, with curtains of long black hair parted in the center so that all I could see was his nose - AND he is dressed all in black). By the look on the late girl's face, he probably glared at her and then I heard him say "Perhaps you hadn't realized, but class did start 15 minutes ago" and he went back to his notes.
Pity he's not a Chemist (no self respecting chemist bothers to spell out compound names).

Then, one of my lab mates starts talking about being obsessed with Harry Potter - films and the books! He happens to like the books I'm not into so we had a nice little debate as we finished up our data analysis :) I wonder if he does fan fic...

Delicious medicine

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I used to giggle whenever my Abuelita (grandma) would prescribe coke - not that I minded at all, and though I always took her advice, I thought it was probably just placebo effect that made me feel better.

No more.

I havent had a coke in like...6 years now? (Wow.) but it SO did the trick with the eel bones. [info]red_day_dawning is my hero! Of course now, it makes perfect sense - a phosphoric acid is obviously going to take care to dissolve/dislodge any calcates around. I will spare you all the gorey details, but suffice to say that there were at least 10 stuck in a small area and now they are GONE!

If anything this is just an incentive for me to eat out less and always prepare my own sea food.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I vow, to NEVER even go near a sushi place again.
Yes, for the record, I am barganing with the powers that be. Its the for sure signed that you are super fucked.
What is so terrible? And why sushi?

We had some Unagi today. Apparently, the guy was new or - whatever. The only thing that matters now is that I have a two tiny eel bones stuck on the very back of my throat/tongue. I have tried rice. I've tried hot then cold. Ice cream helped but so did the warm lemon and honey. However, they are STILL THERE.

Don't get me wrong. There was no chocking or anything. And I was also ableto get 5 of them out, but there are some still there. Swallowing is a new and sadistic venture.

summer in NH?/crash course in tech

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Ooooh, IJ's gone all fancy and now we have all sorts of formatting options. Nice :)

I really came on here to say: OMG!!! I'm FINALLY done!!!
For the past week I've been working on this application for a nanomaterials summer research program, which isn't a big deal in itself except that:
1) I found out about it late given I've been out sick
2) I had to submit everything electronically and that involved a crash course on making PDF's and working in tandem with the wierd Excel format of the application.
3) Getting my non-technologically inclined school to get my transcript there on time.
4) Writing about myself in science when I dont remotely sound like a scientist and lets not start with the punctuation editing. *headdesk*
5) My regular amount of homework still has to get done and I HATE missing physics deadlines.

We ended up paying for over night delivery since we weren't sure the transcript being post makred by today would work (Surprise, surprise, once we'd paid, I found out it did). Mrs.Ink took a half day and helped me make that happen, for which I feel TERRIBLE. But its DONE! If the missus wondered why I dont apply for these amazing opportunities more often, she's got her answer.

That said, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. There is the chance that I will get paired up with two professors doing research on nano iron! And this is all at Dartmouth, which is famous for all sorts of toxic chemical research :D And did I mention that I would get to visit the east coast for the first time? I SO want this. Even if the projects are mostly on biochem oriented research its a great chance to bring the physics and the enviro-chem together! I have to say, that I passionately miss being in the lab, and can't wait!

Snupin Meeting

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
On the train today I realized that there was one deadline that I wasn't going to make, and as the train stalled and then just stopped for like 10 minutes my mind wandered....

Remus looks up to see Severus enter a sunny room strewn with Physics charts, chemical equations and a large desk.
"Well?" Severus demands as the robes settle around him. Remus winces at the tone.
"Good of you to join us, Severus" Inkgeist replies trying for Remus's or Dumbledore like calm and failing.
"If it were not bad enough you mismanage your own time, you have to waste ours?!"
"Look calm down. The train's broken down, so I thought I'd call you two in here and give you good news." A disdainful sniff from Severus. Inkgeist rolls her eyes. "Anyway. First, happy birthday Remus!!!"
"Thank you Ink, though I thought you said you were sending us off until you met your Physics deadline"
"I can still wish you well today, and I'll do better, I actually have a fic done!"
"The one you've had done, no sketched, no ammended, for months but keep not completing?"
"Or I could not send it to beta" glares at Severus. "I thought it would be fair, since I didn't make your birthday, that it would be late for both of you."

when smoky isn't good

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
When I was in high school I would get teased about my voice all the time - its just kinda smoky and I would not have known how to put that to good use if there was a step-by-step guide. Today my voice, which was fine this morning, went from good smoky, to chain-smoker status with a small window of sexy smoky that one of my profs teased me about (I was asking her for a letter of recommendation).

Prf:"You know you should take advantage of that and call people to do stuff for you."
Me: "In that case, can we pretend I didn't miss add on the last question of the midterm?"
Prf: "Nice try. Now go talk to Dr.M about the other letter you need"

Sick day

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
The weather is perfect, its sunny and everything is in bloom. No, I'm not home playing hookie, because I vowed to NEVER do that again, but also because I am sick and getting worse. Let this be a lesson to me: The flu shot does not make you invincible. I wish it was just a matter of brewing Pepper-Up, but the Robitusin with codine, two inhalers, and lemon, honey and clove infusions will have to do for now.

In other news, spring and the fact that lots of our close firends moved to fancy new places inspired the dormant decorating muse, and I now have a new office/library/living room! Its so much more spacially efficient, and the lovely piece of wood atop two file cabinets is the desk of dreams! I've gotten SO MUCH done on it :D I need to post pictures.

Okay, back to the physics and possibly some Snupin smut...

WTF??!!!! When its too stupid to be gay

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So I am listening to our local, and VERY GAY radio station. The morning show is actually hilarious and informative so its the exception to my hating all talking on the radio.
Then there was this commercial.
Something about stamping out the word "Lesbian" in our life time and replacing it with the chic 'GAY-AL'
WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I dont like the term lesbian. I refer to myself as a dyke, but not because I am being subversive and reclaiming a slur. Dykes are not the kind of queer chicks to drive a lexus, wear polo shirts or belong to a golf club. THOSE are lesbians. But this 'new' made up term?!!! Who is spending good money on this?!
Its violently ugly now, do they not think its going to be worse later? The first person to refer to me as a 'gay-al' is getting decked. I mean it.

PS: I don't remember who I stole this icon from - it may have been [info]chazpure, so if its not okay for me to use it, please let me know. I apologize in advance.
